This happens when the drip hole at the end of the condensate tray gets clogged.

If water appears and starts dripping into your room again check to see if the ac unit is properly sealed in the window. If the defrost drain is frozen thaw the ice. These coils get hot because the refrigerant inside is being compressed by the condenser prior to entering the evaporative coils. The spitting water coming from an ac unit is due to the slinger ring that collects water present in the drain pan and splashes it to the coils for cooling purposes.

If the defrost drain is frozen the water will overflow the drain trough and drip down to the bottom of the compartment. If the ac unit is not sealed correctly the moisture in the air coming in from outside gets condensed by the cold air inside the unit and this extra moisture builds up in ac unit and then leaks.
